Craniosacral Therapy calms and quietens the body so your innate healing ability can restore health.

It was borne from Osteopathy, but, uses an incredibly light tough. We use a "butterfly" touch to palpate the body's rhythms. As well as your breathing and heart beat, your body also has a craniosacral rhythm, which is the pulse of fluid inside your central nervous system, much like the pulse of blood in the cardiovascular system. As the name suggests your Craniosacral system is your cranium down to your sacrum, including the spinal column in between and all of the Central Nervous System contained inside. However, CST works not just on the head and spine, but with the whole person and changes may occur in body, mind and spirit during and after sessions.

When a practitioner places their hands lightly on you in the session, they are using them to listen to you in much the same way that a counsellor might listen to your words. Your body responds to this sensitive touch by beginning to listen to itself.  A feeling that you have been heard in the truest sense of the word is a common experience during and after a CST session.

Craniosacral therapy is practiced extensively all around the world and continues to grow in popularity for a wide range of people.

Ultimately the best way to understand CST is to try this profound treatment for yourself.

Craniosacral therapy is not intended as primary healthcare but to work alongside the service provided by your doctor.

Because it is so gentle and non-invasive, CST is suitable for everyone from new-born babies to the elderly. It is ideal in supporting athletes recovering from breaks and sprains. Women often come during pregnancy, and mothers and their babies for problems associated with difficult or traumatic births.

CST supports your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself, as well as helping to reduce stress and build your underlying energy. The practitioner senses tensions in the body and helps to release them in a supported and comfortable way. During or after a session you may feel calm and energised, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being.

During your first session your practitioner will take a written case history, listening with care to the reasons for your visit. This part of the session is important, both for gathering information and to establish a good understanding with your practitioner. The session typically lasts an hour, although it can vary. You remain clothed and will usually lie face up, but you can also be on your side, or seated. The practitioner makes light contact with your head, the base of your spine and other areas, encouraging your body to relax and begin to make the changes it needs. Because the body functions as a whole, your practitioner may focus on areas other than where your symptoms occur.

In the longer term

After a session there is occasionally a short period of adjustment as part of the healing process, when you may become more aware of symptoms. Sometimes people report relief after only one or two sessions, and it most cases we recommend 3 sessions. For long-standing problems further sessions may be needed. Some people find they benefit from regular treatment over an extended period and say that, as well as noticing improvement in their physical or emotional symptoms, they feel they have increased self-awareness and improved quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

On arrival your practitioner will take a written case history, listening with care to the reasons for your visit. You will then be invited to take your shoes off and lie fully clothed on a treatment couch. You may be asked to remove your spectacles, belt or jewellery if they will be in the way or affect your comfort. If you are unable to lie flat, you can be on your side, or in a chair.  During a typical session the practitioner will use a number of gentle hand contacts on the head, the base of the spine and other areas, allowing the client to lie still and relax.

People receiving CST report a wide variety of experiences, including the following:

Relaxation and sense of ease ◊ Warmth, and tingling sensations ◊ Feeling accepted ◊ A sense of harmony and peace ◊ A feeling of letting go ◊ Feeling balanced ◊ Increased energy ◊ Feeling more fully alive ◊ Seeing different colours and patterns ◊ Remembering past events ◊ Getting in touch with emotions ◊  Connecting with a sense of Spirit ◊ Deepening self- and body- awareness.

Through the simplicity of gentle listening touch, CST offers a distinctive stillness that allows your mind and body to rest deeply and begin to restore a natural balance.  CST recognises and assists the connections between body, mind and emotions. In the calm quiet place created during a session these strands can become more fully integrated.
